Tourism promotion dollars in upcoming state budget

The S.C. Legislature has sent the governor a $7 billion state budget that gives $10 million for the 2-for-1 state matching grant for destination-specific marketing. Half of the
$10 million allotment comes from adjustments to the state’s capital reserve fund, which is subject to receipts through the end of the fiscal year and could be adjusted after passage if necessary. For this fiscal year, the MBACC and Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday snagged about three-quarters of the $10 million. The funding is key to the Grand Strand being promoted on the national level. The Myrtle Beach area will be featured on the Travel Channel’s “Samantha Brown: Passport to Great Weekends” show this summer, thanks to the 2-1 matching funds.

Study reveals chamber membership is synonymous with quality and desirability

A national study reveals that chamber membership can significantly boost a business’s image among consumers. In a survey of 2,000 U.S. adults, The Schapiro Group, an Atlanta-based strategic consulting firm, found that when consumers know that a business is a member of the local chamber, they are 44 percent more likely to think favorably about it. Consumers are 63 percent more likely to buy goods and services from a company that is a chamber member. To tap into this reservoir of goodwill, a small business should not only join the local chamber of commerce and participate, but also make sure consumers are aware of that chamber affiliation. Having a good year?

Nominations are being accepted for the South Carolina's Fastest-Growing Companies 2008 program. The deadline for entries is May 16. South Carolina's Fastest-Growing Companies is sponsored by Elliott Davis in cooperation with South Carolina Chamber of Commerce. The top 25 highest-ranking companies will be honored at South Carolina’s Chamber of Commerce Annual Summit event on Nov. 13, 2008, at the Wild Dunes Resort near Charleston, in addition to recognition in a statewide print and broadcast publicity campaign.
